Newport Zoning Board
c/o Zoning Officer Guy Weston
Newport, RI 02840
Dear members of the Zoning Board
I support approval by the Zoning Board of Review of the special use permit proposed for The Breakers welcome center. It allows for a single location to provide a range of essential museum services at The Breakers, Newport's single most important and highly visited museum location: ticketing and orientation, restrooms with ADA access, light refreshments, and a place to sit down and take a break.
These are currently scattered across the facility and are all outdoors, inappropriate for a National Historic Landmark that is open 363 days a year.
The welcome center has already received a wide range of approvals. The Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission and the State Historic Preservation Officer have approved the design and location. The Certificate of Appropriateness has been issued. The Planning Board has agreed the proposal confirms to the Newport Comprehensive Plan.
I believe the proposed design is suitable, well-concealed from public view both from the grounds and from outside the grounds of The Breakers, and provides needed amenities for museum visitors.
I am urging the Zoning Board to approve the proposed special use permit.
